Anabolic Steroids are man-made from dihydrotestosterone & can be useful in AIHA as they stimulate hematopoeisis, increase appetite & promote weight gain. In cases of severe muscle loss (atrophy) due to the catabolic action of corticosteroid treatment, anabolic steroids can be useful to negate this catabolic effect, together with a good protein & carbohydrate diet. Anabolic steroids are useful after chemotherapy to encourage bone marrow regeneration & hematopoeisis.
Side effects include masculinisation, behavioural changes & liver toxicity. In young dogs, anabolic steroids can cause early epiphyseal closure (i.e. ends of bones close up which stops the bones from growing further).
Use with extreme caution in dogs with congestive cardiac (heart) failure or kidney problems.
Not to be used for pregant bitches as female foetuses will develop male characteristics.
