- Megan & Sophie
My dog Sophie has had IMHA for almost 2 months now and has now had 3 blood transfusions. She is a 9 year old 5 lb Maltese. I have been talking to a few of y’all and wanted your opinions. She is on Pred, Atopica, Soloxine and Mysophenelate (last Wednesday the vet upped it to 4ml per day instead of 3ml). She of course has the meds for vomiting and diarrhea just in case and we’ve used them for sure and now they put her on a med to get her to eat again as she is now not eating and I am syringing baby food in her (I have tried everything)…and I have home cooked for her for years so she normally loves to eat and are just now having a problem with it (I think it’s the Mysophenelate). Any other suggestions? And how much baby food should I give per meal? Also we thought she wouldn’t eat due to her lack of BM for a few days but then went a little this morning but still doesn’t want food…well except organic cream cheese with her meds (is Feta cheese better for dogs?) Just started the cream cheese today and I know it can constipate them too so I hate to give it to her but have no idea what else to do…organic coconut oil? I read that was good for dogs…very frustrated at this point.
Megan,
I can just imagine how frustrated you are with your little Sophie not eating, especially since normally she likes her food. I have a few questions and suggestions. Why was the Mysophenelate increased. What dose of Pred and Atopica is Sophie getting? Is she on something to protect her stomach? Carafate or Sucralfate. If she has taken large doses of prednisone, it could have caused ulcers and that could cause her to loose her appetite. What kind of baby food are you giving her? At this point the food is totally trial and error. Sophie might not eat something today and like it tomorrow and the other way around, you just never know. Try not to make too much of a fuss and just keep it happy go lucky. Sometimes dogs remember that eating made them nauseous so they leave it all together. Try frying an egg in a bit of butter. Adding pumpkin, plain canned pumpkin not the pie filling, to Sophie’s food could help with both diarrhea and constipation. Try and be creative, try different things, boiled chicken or turkey, fish, potatoes. If you have home cooked for her I am sure you have a good idea what could work for her. Try and keep it as lean as possible. Too much fat could cause pancriatitis. I am sure a tiny bit of coconut oil can’t hurt. I think Feta could be quite salty so the cream cheese is probably better.
Don’t give up, you are doing a great job. Sophie will eventually get her appetite back.
Best wishes, Brigitte
The vet increased the Mysophenelate because she started her out slow at first and then I think because her PCV wasn’t increasing…I’m really not sure, she get upset when I ask a lot of questions (and I have been). She is on 10mg of Atopica twice a day, Soloxine .1 mg a day, and 5mg Pred a day (half a tablet morning and night-so 2.5mg each time). She takes Pepcid an hour before meds which is two hrs before her food. 7am/pm-Pepcid, 8am/pm-Pred, Atopica and Soloxine, 9am/pm-food (what I can get down her) and her milk thistle, SAMe and Ostrophen and then her Mysophenelate after. She has been on the Pepcid from the very beginning. I’ve tried all the food you listed and the pumpkin (which she use to eat). She was eating eggs but then stopped the other day…I think she needs to go to the bathroom, I don’t know anymore…I only feed her very lean no hormones and organic meats and free range eggs from a neighbor. The baby food is organic (a few different brands), I have just fruit ones, veggie ones and some with kale, spinach, quinoa, chicken or turkey. No garlic, onions or grapes =) I’ll stick with the organic cream cheese, thank you =) This is soooo hard, I never thought it would get this bad.
Hi Megan, yes as Brigitte says I think if Sophie is not eating, then anything goes. Try whatever. What sort of foods are you trying now and what did she like before?
I agree about the Sucralfate or other stomach protector. The drugs must be upsetting her tummy so it would be good to use something to coat the stomach first. Just make sure it’s not given at the same time as meds.
Do you have her last blood test results? Might be an idea to set them out here too as well as list the dosages of the drugs she’s on.
My best, Vally & Bingo

Also what about Aloe Vera juice? Is it safe for dogs? I know my grandfather had awful ulcers and he stopped eating as well, started drinking Aloe Vera juice and he’s much better…
Megan, 20mg a day of Atopica for a 5lb dog sounds like a lot to me. Bingo weights 17lb and was on 25mg a day (now reduced to every second day). Atopica can also cause stomach problems. I’ve just read 4 to 6.5 lbs, the dosage is 10mg daily. Maybe check her dosage with your vet?
Aloe vera juice is okay for dogs. It seemed to upset Bingo’s stomach though. So did the milk thistle and he’s got a cast iron stomach. I’ve actually dropped the aloe and reduced the milk thistle.
Try with a little bit of aloe. Seems to be good for a lot of dogs. Also how much milk thistle are you giving. I know it’s great for the liver but it can cause stomach upsets. Perhaps reduce it a little?
Regards, Vally
