Iron deficiency is a cause of anemia. Iron deficiency is usually caused by blood loss & it is therefore important to find the underlying cause, but may also be due to poor diet.
Iron deficiency progressively interferes with haematopoiesis. Anisocytosis and an increase in microcytic cells are the first signs in stage 1, but Hg & transferrin are usually normal. Subsequently (Stage 2) the MCV and MCH become lower & Hg & transferrin are usually lower. Stage 3 of iron deficiency shows a low MCHC, low Hg & low transferrin.
