- Bingo – likes to make me worry
Bingo decided to act funny again last night. I’ll start by saying I rang the vets and they said he’s okay. Don’t panic. Just watch him and I made an appointment for Saturday week.
Okay. We were roughhousing, as we do most nights after he’s eaten. He goes into the room with the carpet and starts rolling around after dinner – it’s to wipe his mouth clean on the carpet I’m pretty sure. We usually play ball for a while, or tug-a-war with his blanket or he just gets a good scratch all over while he rolls around on the carpet. He chooses.
It was the latter last night, rolling and scratching when he suddenly pulled away and just sat there. I was talking to him, thinking I may had hurt him. He starts to walk and seems very unbalanced, looks a bit drunk. I’m thinking this is the beginning of a seizure and am just lightly holding him so he doesn’t fall and talking to him. This is maybe 4-5 second. I say something like It’s okay we’ll get and get some chicken. Well he pulls away spins around and barks at me and races into the kitchen. Now I’m sitting on the floor stunned. He comes running back in, barks at me some more and runs back to the kitchen, where he’s doing a dance for his dinner and barking at the top of his voice.
What the hell was that!!!
I fed him and he’s fine. I rang the vets. My vet wasn’t there but spoke to another. They said they didn’t think it was a seizure as it sounds too quick and he’s snapped out of it too quickly too. So I’ve made an appointment with my guy, but not till Saturday of next week. Obviously if I see anything else I’ll just take some time off and go in.
He woke me up at about 1 am needing to go out and did a small sloppy poo. After which we went back to bed and about half an hour later, same thing, with another very sloppy small poo. Bed.
This morning he didn’t want to get up, but he’s getting lazier in the mornings and it’s dark when I get up. I mention food and he changes his mind and agrees it’s time to get up. I checked his temperature, all good. He’s fine this morning.
I’m thinking maybe inner ear? He has a wart in his ear where bits of it come off and I clean this out. His vet said we’ll leave this alone unless it causes issues. There was some gunk in his ear from the wart which I cleaned out.
I’m thinking vestibular? No other symptoms though. Eyes not moving, no heat tilt, although maybe he did lean towards one side.
Bloody dog!!! Why does he soooo love to worry me.
I’ll be watching him like a hawk of course.

Oh Bingo – are you trying to give your Mum a nervous breakdown here? Vally, I’m sorry you’ve got this to worry about. I also think it was rather quick for a seizure because of the fast recovery, but I’m no expert. It could just be a little dizzy spell maybe as he has a mucky ear & this sounds like the most likely culprit. Perhaps it’s time to remove that warty thing. Has he been shaking his head at all? Some people get loose stools with dizziness, or it is possible he might have picked up a little tummy upset from eating something he shouldn’t have? It doesn’t sound as “serious” as a vestibular attack, even though it’s worrying to see this happening to him. Or is it possible something may have hurt when you were play fighting & it made him stop for a second or too? So here we go again – see how he goes & if it recurs, speak to the vets. Big sigh. As you say, bloomin’ dogs love to give us something to stress about! Maybe I should make him some ear muffs now?
Let us know how he’s doing – you know I will be thinking about you & Bingo – and please try not to worry too much
Loads of love from his Aunty Sheena & his pals Worzel & Ollie xxxx
Day 1. All good on the home front. He’s been very good tonight. He probably knew if he tried anything on tonight I was ready to lose it.
He wanted to play with his ball, and his blanket and he thought he should get some scratches too. I was trying to make sure he didn’t toss his blanket around too much, in case it made him dizzy. He said get over it – he’ll toss his blanket where he wants, when he wants.
No Sheena, he doesn’t deserve any ear muffs or anything else. Despite that, I made his favourite tonight of poached chicken. Because he could smell it cooking, he carried on like he was being drawn and quartered being made to wait to eat.
I’m thinking I’m going to get his thyroid checked again. That hasn’t been checked in a while.
Love Vally & steady.
Thyroid check is a good idea – hypothyroidism makes people have balance problems (plus lots of other things!), so why not Bingo??

Vally, so happy to hear that Bingo is feeling better, and also that you’ll be checking his thyroid — can’t hurt! Silly Bingo, are you playing with your mum? You need to find another way to do that.
Sending you love and hugs –
Tamara and Ashki
Oh goodness – I’m reading, upset for you and Bingo, and laughing at the same time. Vally, you are a hoot! And Bingo boy – you really have to have more respect for you mom and not worry her so. Children – what can ya do?!
As I was reading, I was thinking maybe inner ear or you’re right, thyroid. But I’m the least experienced here. The BM is a little weird too, but if he’s upset inside, that would make sense.
As you say, Sheena – just when the waters are calm – splash – they soak us!!
Right now Sadie is snoring VERY loud. I think she gave up on me and decided she may as well get a good nap in since she’s being ignored. She’s right, I’ve been on the computer all day. Poor, deprived little girl.
Love to you all and Bingo, be well okay?!
Linda and zzzzzzz Sadie
Oh Bingo! I think he just likes to keep you on your toes Vally.
I’m sorry to hear that he’s spooked you, and I wish I had something helpful to offer, but a thyroid check sounds like a good idea. Is he on thyroxine at all? How’s he getting on with skip-a-day?
Really pleased that he’s his normal self today and blanket-tossing merrily. Please let us know how he gets on.
Mary and Bingo’s only cat friend, Mable x
Hi Mary, yes he takes thyroxine. Way back, his local vets believed that was his problem. It took forever to get blood tests back as one general blood test simply showed he was anaemic, second blood test went missing and third showed he was hypothyroid. He was put on 100mcg twice a day, but then ended up very sick and went to specialist hospital where he was diagnosed with AIHA (and polyarthritis). At that point they did further blood tests and put him on an extra 100mcg in the morning, so 2 am and 1 pm, but as he rapidly lost so much weight in the early days with pred, they cut his thyroxine back down to just the 2 a day again.
He’s been good since the other night. Still a little quiet at times and sleeps very heavily at night with some muscle twitching. Meal times, loud as usual.
I’ve managed to get next Tuesday off, so I’ve changed the appointment to Tuesday.
