Leukeran (Chlorambucil) is a veterinary drug used in the chemotherapy treatment of some cancers and also immune-mediated conditions such as AIHA. It works by interfering with DNA replication in rapidly dividing cells such as lymphocytes that are responsible for the autoimmune attack on red blood cells in AIHA. A major side effect is the risk of bone marrow suppression. This would reduce the number of red blood cells and other types of white cells being produced as well. Exercise caution using with Azathioprine and Cyclophosphamide. There are other bothersome side effects so this drug should be thought of as a last choice in treatment after other drugs have been tried.
