- Snow, not eating
Firstly, I’ve been so grateful to find this website and forum with such a wealth of information about IMHA.
My dog, Snow, a golden retriver and labrador mix, was diagnosed with IMHA on 7/4/22 and was hospitalized for 6 days. He received two blood transfusions and we had the roller coaster of finding out his PCV and total solids every 8 hours during that week. He was admitted with a PCV of 15, got as low as 22 and he was discharged on last Sunday with a PCV of 19 and a total solids of 6.2. He was eating well and drinking while he was hospitalized.
Now that he is home, his gums are stayinh pinkish and he’s had his PCV rechecked, it held at 19! However, he’s not really eaten. The first day or two, he wasn’t hungry much, but would eat a little bit. Now, he won’t eat at all.
Let me give some details here. He’s lost lots of weight, so he was 83 lbs pre-IMHA, but now he weighs around 71 lbs. He’s taking 500 mg of Mycophenolate twice a day, 200mg of Doxycycline twice a day, 60 mg of prednisone a day twice a day, 1 tablet of Proviable-DC a day, and 20 mg Famotidine twice a day. I was advised to only feed him boiled chicken and rice or boiled hamburger and rice due to his liver needing time to heal from dealing with the IMHA.
Snow was not interested in the rice, but would each some chicken. I noticed that he wanted tiny little pieces that he didn’t have to chew. He has stopped being interested in any good. I’ve offered boiled chicken, rotisserie chicken, beef liver, a poached egg, GI-diet wet food, etc.
I told the vert of my concerns on Wednesday when he went back for his PCV and I was advised to see how things went and come back on Sunday or Monday for a PCV recheck and we would see about the eating piece.
He stopped drinking water yesterday, so I called the vet up and Snow has now been prescribed Entyce 3.2 ml per day and ondansetron 16 mg twice a day. I gave him these medications at 4 pm and he started drinking water again, but still won’t eat.
He’s really experiencing the side effects of the prednisone and has so much muscle wasting and he now has difficulty getting up. I’m sure this has been made worse by his lack of food intake.
I asked if he could take sucralfate, but the vet doesn’t want to add that in. I’m worried he has pancreatitis or at least that his stomach is the reason that he won’t eat anything.
I’m wondering if he should stay on the mycophenolate instead of another immune-suppressant?
Snow doesn’t have a primary vet because we moved across the country several months ago and haven’t established care with someone yet so we’ve just been dealing with the emergency vet, since he’s been discharged I’ve only heard from the vets secondhand from the techs that have taken my phone calls or spoken with him. I did get an appointment with a local vet, but I couldn’t get it until this coming Wednesday and I know that Snow cannot wait that long for help..
This whole disease has been so horrible. My husband and I are so stressed and worried and while we thought we would be able to weather this financially, we’re starting to get strapped. We want to do everything we can, but dealing only with the emergency vet every time has been so expensive.
We’re thinking we will take him back to the emergency vet in the morning since he still isn’t eating. We’re really hoping for the best.
Hi Eleanor. I’m so sorry to hear about Snow and I know how worried you are.
I’m thinking it could be the mycophenolate. It really is not my favourite drug for treatment. It is known to cause serious stomach issues. See

Unfortunately, it seems to be the drug of choice with many vets. Ask about swopping it with Cyclosporine.
Trust your gut and I think please do go and see the emergency vet. Stomach protection is really important and Snow seems to be suffering from stomach issues. It’s also vital to check on pancreatitis.
The early days are the worst and Snow will probably look better before he improves, but I am worried about him not eating and certainly not drinking.
Ask anything.

Vally,
Thank you so much for your reply. I took Snow straight back to the emergency vet this morning. He’s been seen by a couple of different vets now..so he’s not really getting continuity of care. I’m looking forward to his PCP vet appointment on Wednesday and to adding Dr. Jean Dobbs, if I can too.
So the back to today, the vet that saw Snow today said that she doesn’t want to change the mycophenolate to cyclosporine, as she says it take 30 days to take full effect.
I asked about adding sucralfate and she was surprised that he wasn’t already on it.
She also decided to put him back on the anti-nausea medication that he ran out of on Thursday, Cerenia. I had asked about this earlier in the week, but was told to wait and see if he needed it.
We left the vet today with a Cerenia shot, a couple days worth of Cerenia pills, and a few days of sucralfate. I also asked about the dosage of the mycophenolate, as Snow has lost about 10 lbs since he started taking it. She has dropped the dosage to 250 mg twice a day, which is about half of what he was taking before.
Snow actually drank a good bit of water this afternoon and even stood up to drink water, which was promising.
We were relieved that he ate anything at all, but all he ate today was 3 tiny tiny pieces of a hot dog. I know it’s not good for him to eat something like that right now, but I was hopeful to get him to touch anything at this point.
I’m giving him a second dose of sucralfate in about an hour and a half, so that it will be on his stomach all night with nothing else. I’m really hoping this helps.
Poor thing has had horrible liquid diarrhea since last night. He doesn’t seem to be able to control it and it smells kind of metallic. This has really worried me, but I was told today, by one of the vet techs that this is not uncommon for a dog on high doses of prednisone. I’m not sure about that, but we made it through today.
Eleanor, I’m glad Snow is on the sucralfate. Make sure it’s given 2 hours away from meds and food. If you need help charting times for the drugs, I’d be happy to help work out a timetable with you.
I hope you do get Dr Dodds on your side, she’s a champion. She’s our angel here on Second Chance. She helped me with my boy, Bingo, and even after he had recovered, I still called on her at different times whenever something came up.
Make certain that prednisone and mycophenolate are given with food. I know how hard that might be right now as Snow doesn’t want to eat, but maybe just a small piece of hotdog as you’ve done. Yes, you’re right it’s not the best, but I understand how anything right now is better than nothing.
Hoping Snow settles with his meds really soon, and can start the road to recovery.
Regards, Vallly
Good afternoon Vally,
I would really appreciate it if you could help me get the timeline right for all of his medications. I thought I had it, but he has nine and special guidelines for most, so I’m getting lost.
My husband realized that we could puree food and use a syringe to help get something in Snow’s stomach while we get his medication right, so we tried that today and were able to get some chicken and a piece of cod into him!
