Dogs taking high dose immunosuppressives (i.e. prednisone) may develop unsightly areas of hard plaques or spots on the skin that are the result of calcium deposition in the skin. The wounds can be itchy and prone to staph infections. Smaller plaques of calcium can be absorbed by the body when the prednisone dose is lowered. Larger areas may need to be removed surgically.
In cats this is commonly caused by kidney disease.
