Tick Borne Diseases (sometimes called vector-borne) can be triggers for AIHA & ITP. Just one tick bite can infect your dog & ticks are often found to carry more than one disease. Prevention of ticks is always the best way to avoid infection & vaccinations are available for some diseases. Many tick borne diseases have only vague symptoms & by the time a diagnosis is made, it can sometimes be too late to treat the disease successfully. If you notice any change in behaviour, anything worrying, or suspect an infection of any kind, always consult your vet as a matter of urgency. Tests can be done (including PCR) to determine what kind of infection is present.
Tick borne diseases include:
- Ehrlichiosis (Ehrlichia)
- Lyme Disease (Boreliosis)
- Babesiosis (Piroplasmosis)
- Anaplasmosis
- Hepatozoonosis
- Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
- Hemobartonellosis
- Tick Paralysis
- Turalemia
