- Flea medication info and update on Jackie
Hi Everyone!!
Unfortunately I have been absent from this website for far too long. I wanted to ask a question regarding flea medication and also give an update on Jackie since tomorrow will mark exactly one year since she was diagnosed with this horrible disease. Jackie is doing amazing and back to all of her Poodle ways! She is 100% back to what she was like before this disease and shows no signs of lasting side effects other than needing to be on prescription food for her pancreatitis. I was just in Europe for 2 weeks and came back to the poor thing being infested with fleas!! She has never had fleas before since she is mostly an indoor dog so I haven’t had to give her any flea meds for a few years and we don’t live in a tick area. I remember the vet telling me while she was sick to be careful with flea medication and to only give her topical high quality medication. Being the paranoid fur mom that I am, I am not sure what to do. Can anyone give me advice on what they give their dogs? Maybe I should just do a flea bath? I am just so paranoid about giving anything that might make her sick again.
Thanks!!
Hey Anna, it’s great to hear Jackie is doing so well and I hope you had a fabulous time in Europe.
For fleas, we had an infestation about 2 years back. I would simply comb them off Bingo daily into a bowl of hot water with a little detergent as I was very nervous about using anything.
Adding a little garlic to their food helps (although I have never done this being nervous about garlic). Then there’s diatomaceous earth. MUST BE FOOD GRADE. This can be spread about inside and outside and on Jackie’s coat (away from face). Again, I’ve never done this as I’ve read you shouldn’t breath it in and that makes me a bit nervous. I think Linda has used it. Maybe she can guide you on how to use it.
Now for the things I DO do. Bingo gets a vitamin B injection every 2 weeks. I noticed that really made a difference to fleas. Hardly any after that. I also now give him brewer’s yeast too, for arthritis, in his food and that’s just put the icing on the cake. I have NOT seen a flea in months. We’re in our last month of spring here so there should be fleas but seriously NOT ONE.
When going for a walk before, I would spray his hind quarters with a product called Vet+Best Flea and Tick, which Lynn recommended, as a precaution to.
