Hypoalbuminemia is abnormally low blood levels of albumin. Albumin is a major protein made in the liver that makes up about 60% of total plasma protein. Albumin normally stays within the blood and this prevents fluid from leaking out of the capillaries into local tissues. This condition may cause generalized excess fluid buildup (edema) because of a decrease in oncotic pressure.
Low serum albumin may indicate a problem with the liver. Dogs being treated for AIHA with high dose prednisone can experience an inflamed liver. Albumin levels should be monitored.
